If your school uses SIMS to store student and teacher data centrally, we strongly recommend that your nominated Collins Connect administrator chooses to set up using SIMS-Sync.
A small program will be installed on your school network that allows teacher and student data to be automatically imported into Collins Connect from SIMS. Unique teacher and student accounts are automatically generated from this. School classes are automatically populated and assigned to the correct teachers.
Students log in using their date of birth, first letter of surname and year group – so there's no need to remember tricky usernames and passwords. Students have their own home page which tells them which homeworks and tests they need to complete. Record sheets are maintained for each student so you can track their individual progress over time. You can exchange feedback with students on homeworks and tests within the platform.Standalone version
If your school does not use SIMS for storing student and teacher data, your nominated Collins Connect administrator can choose to set Collins Connect up as a standalone platform. They can then set up teacher accounts manually. One username and password is created for all students to allow them access to their courses. Each homework and test you set has its own link that you need to distribute to your students – via email, a learning platform or any other way you choose. When students take a homework or test, they need to fill in a short form to help us identify them and results are stored separately for each homework or test.
Collins Connect only imports what is necessary from your SIMS database. We import two sets of data:
The SIMS-Sync software links directly with your school's SIMS database and needs to be installed on the same server.
You need to run the import with a SIMS account that has the following five group privileges: Curricular Manager, School Administrator, Third Party Reporting, Assessment Co-ordinator and TP Super User. This will allow access to all the relevant student and teacher records that Collins Connect needs.
Every Collins Connect account needs to have an email address as this is what we will use for the username as well as sending password reset information and details of updates and new features to teacher users. The work and main email addresses in SIMS take preference over other email types when being imported via SIMS-Sync.
The order of preference during SIMS-Sync relating to email types is as follows:
You can set this by doing the following: (Show/hide text below)
Within SIMS select Focus | Person | Staff to display the Employee Details page, and search for an existing staff member to display their details. If there is no school domain email address present click on New adjacent to Email Addresses panel, then enter the school email address, set the Location to Work and Main to Yes.
If a personal email address is present it can remain, but adding the work email address will mean that it is prioritised for use within Collins Connect.
The next time SIMS-Sync runs, the new work email address will now be picked up as the main address.
There is a vast amount of data within SIMS and we do not need to access all of this.
To save your servers a huge data overload and to ensure data is protected by not being moved unnecessarily, SIMS Change Control is used to track what is actually changed within SIMS. You can change the settings so that you don't have a huge file build-up of tracked changes.
